Napoleon I's love letters to Josephine : facsimiles, 1795-1800.

Consists of 27 facsimiles of 8 letters, one facsimile per sheet of the original. Each facsimile is mounted on a blank page and accompanied by a transcription of 1-4 p. (17 p. of transcription in all) and a dealer's blurb (numbered from 1511 to 1518) describing the letter. A dealer's blurb describing the whole collection is also laid in. The facsimiles were originally published as an appendix to Charles Tennant's A tour through parts of the Netherlands, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Savoy and France in the year 1821-2. The 1st, undated, letter is variously ascribed to Dec. 1795 or Mar. 1796.

Born Marie Josephe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie on the island of Martinique, she was married to Alexandre, Vicomte de Beauharnais in 1779. He was guillotined in 1794. She was introduced to Napoleon Bonaparte in 1795 and married him in 1796. He made her his empress in 1804, but divorced her in 1810.
